Toyota's American-built Sequoia is a large SUV that comes in SR5 and uplevel Limited models. The only engine is a 273-hp V8, the only transmission a 5-speed automatic. Both Toyota Sequoia models come with rear-wheel drive or with 4-wheel drive. The 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential. All Toyota Sequoias have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction/antiskid control. Standard seating is for eight. Limiteds seat seven with optional 2nd-row buckets and center console. A safety option includes front side airbags and curtain side airbags; the curtains cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. SR5 is available with self-leveling suspension, Limited with selectable rear height control. Options include a navigation system and DVD entertainment.
Toyota Sequoia suffers the usual big-SUV vices, but it merits our Recommended badge as a refined, well-equipped Toyota. Still, top domestic-brand rivals match it in many ways while typically towing more than Toyota Sequoia's 6500-lb maximum. They usually carry bigger price discounts, too.
