A rearview camera is a new option for this gas/electric hybrid car. Toyota Prius also gets minor styling changes for 2006. This five-passenger 4-dr hatchback teams a 4-cyl gasoline engine with a battery-powered electric motor for 110 hp. Toyota's hybrid system automatically runs on one or both of its power sources to balance acceleration and fuel economy. No plug-in charging is required. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) provides near-infinite drive ratios. ABS and traction control are standard. An antiskid system is available. So are front torso side airbags and curtain side airbags. Also optional is a voice-controlled navigation system integrated with a standard multifunction touch screen. New for '06 is an available rearview camera. Other options include xenon headlamps and keyless entry/starting system.
Hollywood's favorite hybrid will apparently carry on as is for the foreseeable future. In fact, word from Japan is that Toyota hasn't even started on a redesign. That's understandable, as Toyota Prius sales keep outstripping supply, with long waits and above-sticker transaction prices still largely the rule. Though Toyota is trying to meet demand, Toyota Prius should remain hard to get, especially with high gasoline prices now looking like a permanent fact of life.
Toyota Prius costs more than most other fuel-efficient cars, a price premium that may take years to offset in fuel savings. And demand outstrips supply, so don't count on a price break. But Toyota Prius trumps the Honda Civic Hybrid for interior room, acceleration, and handling. The value calculation also must take into account the hybrid system's emissions benefits, plus Toyota's well-earned reputation for reliability and resale value. By any standard, this is a pleasant, practical, and sophisticated car.
