Toyota Corolla, this popular small sedan lends its platform to Toyota's Matrix wagon and the related Pontiac Vibe. Toyota Corolla offers base CE, sporty S, luxury LE, and performance-oriented XRS models. All use a 1.8-liter 4-cyl engine. CE, S, and LE send 126 hp through 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmissions. XRS has 164 hp and mandatory 6-speed manual, plus unique trim, sport suspension, and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. ABS is standard on XRS, optional otherwise. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags are available linewide. S and LE offer an optional antiskid system. Leather upholstery is available for LE.
Toyota Corolla's forecast calls for a full 2008 redesign featuring a larger interior, a more rakish roofline and a somewhat wider tall-body architecture. We think the 4-cyl engine will grow to at least 2.0 liters to handle the new models' likely added weight. The redesign reportedly includes a gas/electric hybrid powertrain, though our moles don't expect it until a year or two after launch. The next Toyota Corolla uses a quite versatile new platform said to be destined for no fewer than a dozen upcoming Toyota models worldwide. Among them are a redesigned 2007 RAV4 compact SUV and new offerings in the youth-oriented Scion line.
