Toyota History
Toyota vehicles are well known for quality and reliability which is why used Toyota vehicles are not only best sellers when they are new, but also when they are used.
Originally developed as the "automobile department" of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. In 1935 Toyoda developed a prototype, the "Al", which gave birth to the Toyota Motor Co. Which in 1937, Toyoda spun off Toyota Motor Co, to be led by Kiichiro Toyoda, the eldest son of Sakichi Toyoda, found of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. It wasn't long before the Toyota Motor Co was producing both cars and pickup trucks, producing more than 100,000 vehicles by the end of the 1940s.
In the 1950s, Toyota continued to grow it's small cars, and also introduced the BJ, the precursor the well known Land Cruiser and model for the current Toyota FJ Cruiser. Before the decade would end, Toyota began to export to the United States, establishing Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. First to hit the US market was the Crown.
The 1960s provided even more growth for Toyota, with the introduction of the Corolla in 1966, which in 1997 became the worlds best selling car, with over 35 million sold as of 2007. Lesser known Toyota vehicles also launched in the 60s include the Publica, the 2000GT, Hiace and Miniace. Toyota closed the 60s with annual domestic sales of one million vehicles, and one million exports.
In the 1970s, Toyota's Corolla continued to grow in popularity, and Toyota introduced the US Market to the Corona and Mk II, and the very successful Celica sports coupe. The oil crisis of the 70's helped the success of Toyotas compact, fuel efficient vehicles in the United States. By the end of the 1970s, Toyota exported more than 10 million vehicles.
Toyota expanded even further into the US market in 1980s, with the introduction of the 4Runner and the MR2 sports car. It was the introduction of the Camry that would mark the 1980s as Toyota break through. Known as the Celica Camry in Japan, the Camry would be a huge hit in the US market, earning best-selling car of the year many times.
The 1990s Toyota expanded into the larger sedan market with the Avalon, as well as expanding it's SUV offering with the Rav4. In 1997 Toyota introduced the Hybrid Prius in Japan, and it was available in the USA in 2001. Toyota produced more than 100 million vehicles had been produced in Japan by the end of the 1990s.
Today, Toyota maintains an impressive line of vehicles in all classes, compact, sedan, SUV and truck. All of which are very popular and remain popular even when used, as such they hold their resale value very well.
